Wanderlust is an eclectic and poetic selection of works designed to uplift and delight.
It includes the world premiere of a new CCS commission, Arboretum for choir, flute and piano, with words and music by Dan Walker, celebrating memorable and meaningful features and landscapes of the National Arboretum Canberra.
The concert repertoire includes the reverent beauty of Anton Bruckner’s Locus lste (“This Place”), a Gradual for the dedication of a church), settings of two poems by American poet Robert Frost: The Road Not Taken by Audrey Snyder and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Eric Whitacre. English composer Edward Elgar’s rollicking From the Bavarian Highlands invites us to the merry dance while Arthur Sullivan’s setting of Robert Herrick’s Fair Daffodils invokes our own transient Floriade blooms.
French composer and musician Lili Boulanger’s setting of Philippe Gille’s poem Sous Bois (Undergrowth or Forest Floor) composed when she was just 18, describes two lovers as they walk through the forest, reminiscing on the beauty and finiteness of the nature before them.
The tenors and basses shine in Dan Walker’s arrangement of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Vagabond (words by Robert Louis Stevenson) celebrating the wanderer’s life – free of social constraints.
Through her imaginative and passionate setting for female voices of Lord Byron’s poem She Walks in Beauty, Canberran Sally Whitwell transports the listener to a place of breathless excitement and joyous love.
