Virtuoso cellist Christopher Pidcock returns to his Canberra roots as guest conductor and soloist for this program of Tchaikovsky, Haydn and

Richard interviews Chris Pidcock at the ANU School of Music

Pidcock is a regular performer with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and will perform two major works for cello and chamber orchestra in the performance: Haydn’s famous Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme Op. 33

Pidcock will also direct the Symphony in G Minor by lesser-known classical composer Antonio Rosetti. This is a powerful testament to Classical-era craftsmanship.

Sinfonia Artistic Director Leonard Weiss, currently studying in the US, is elated about Pidcock returning to Canberra for this performance:

‘Chris is among the most highly respected musicians in Australia. I have been fortunate to collaborate with him for recent performances of Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Grisey’s Vortex Temporum; in every rehearsal and performance his world-class musicianship is on full display.

‘Having started his musical journey in Canberra, this is the perfect collaboration for the Canberra Sinfonia.’
