Ein deutsches Requiem – Canberra Choral Society and National Capital Orchestra

Saturday 24 July 2021 at 3pm
Llewelyn Hall, ANU School of Music
Conducted by Leonard Weiss
Chorus Master Dan Walker

After a year of COVID enforced hibernation, this traditional annual collaboration of the Canberra Choral Society and the National Capital Orchestra features Brahms’s most personal work – a masterpiece that established his unmistakable musical voice and reputation.

Leonard Weiss talks to Barbie about Ein deutsches Requiem

Consisting of passages selected from the Lutheran Bible, rather than drawing inspiration from the typical Latin mass, the text traces key themes of comfort and hope – noticeably omitting the standard Requiem fare of judgement and sacrifice. The piece is uplifting, denoted in its ending in a bright major key.

Depending on border closures, Song Company soprano Amy Moore and baritone Hayden Barrington may appear as soloists.

Canberra audiences, in any case, will be delighted to see Lenny Weiss back conducting after his interrupted study period in the US.
