Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire (1912) is somewhere between cabaret and concert. Showcasing the talents of soprano Jane Sheldon, it translates each tiny poem into music.
The piece is over 100 years old, but it remains radical to the ear – a revolutionary classic that transformed music and concerts forever, just as Cubism changed painting.
Also on the program will be the Australian premiere of composer-performer Laura Bowler’s long form work Deconstructing Pierrot (2024).
The work was co-commissioned by Red Note Ensemble (Scotland), Music on Main (Canada) and Ensemble Offspring, It offers a fresh interpretation of Albert Giraud’s poems.
Bowler will deconstruct Schoenberg’s original musical material, viewing it through a contemporary queer lens.
