A survey exhibition of linocuts
Belconnen Arts Centre
8 July to 21 August 2022
Opening 6pm Friday 8 July 2022
The title of the exhibition, My Greece indicates how much of the artist’s creative life is entwined with Greece. It was the enthusiasm for Ancient Greece of Michael Winter’s History of Art lecturer at Art School which instilled in him the desire to visit Greece. His first visit was in 1965.
After spending time in Athens, he visited the island of Leros. He has subsequently lived and worked in Greece for long periods and in 2007 he set up a printmaking studio on Leros.
Some of the works in this exhibition were created there. The exhibition at BAC is a survey of Michael Winters’ Greek linocuts from 1995 to 2022.
His aim was to create both a sense of place but it was also a technical challenge to use layer upon layer of colour in his work rather than the usual black and white that many associate with linocuts.
Moving to Canberra in 1992 and coming upon the printmaking Studio One was really the genesis of these works.
