The Scandinavian Film Festival

Palace Electric Cinema Acton, 11 to 29 July 2018

Courtesy of Palace Electric and the Scandinavian Film Festival we attended a preview screening of What will people say? (directed by Iram Haq and starring Maria Mozdah).

It’s a demanding watch, a view of traditional Pakistani culture and the dichotomy between this and western society in contemporary Norway. The program notes opine that it ‘will no doubt trigger emotion, conversation and debate with its relevance to the lives of Australian migrants and their families.’ I can but agree.

The festival offerings are varied with films from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland. Opening the festival in Canberra on 11 July is UNDER THE TREE, a very dark comedy from Icelandic writer-director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson. The other Icelandic film that appeals to me is The Swan.

A short compilation Bergman Revisited celebrates the 100th anniversary of this director considered one of the ‘greatest ever’.

The full program can be found at https://scandinavianfilmfestival.com Palace Electric website has scheduled times for Canberrans.
