Golden Hour is the hour before sunset or before sunrise. It is known for its beautiful golden light and is a time particularly beloved of photographers.

Sophie Ryan’s Golden Hour is a series of paintings inspired by studies, memory and photographs taken from the artist’s childhood home outside Bathurst on the Macquarie River. This body of work combines an exploration of colour, light and shadow.

The work is the artist’s response to growth and what it means to live in a new place but yearn for the grounding of familiarity and comforts. It is about the meaning of home and how it feels to be open to an expanded idea of home and place.
