Val Johnson’s latest exhibition traces a journey through the Australian landscape, as she travelled from Melbourne aboard the Overland train and then north on the Ghan from Adelaide.

Barbie visited Strathnairn Arts to talk to Val Johnson about Tracks North

Along the way, she sketched and photographed the shifting terrain, its colour and atmosphere – in Alice Springs, Katherine Gorge and Darwin.

Back home she worked on this large body of work, translating these experiences into richly observed oil paintings. From the vast red interior to the lush wetlands of the Top End, the exhibition reflects her deep love of place, movement and memory.
