ZEST Dance for Wellbeing program

Belconnen and Tuggeranong Arts Centres
Ongoing, 10 week terms, parallel to the ACT School Terms

ZEST classes are designed for adults who want to keep their body and brain active and healthy, regardless of their mobility, skill or age. This program is managed and conducted by Philip Piggin, Jan Ingall, Debora di Centa and Jacqui Simmonds.

Philip Piggin talks about the ZEST Dance for Wellbeing program

The classes start sitting on a chair, with options to stand and move through the space. No previous dance experience is necessary.

With a focus on total wellbeing, the classes operate in cognitive, physical, spiritual and social domains. At the core of each class is respect for where each participant is on the day and in general.

Music and social connection are major factors in making these classes a pleasant experience for participants and their carers. Everyone is treated as a dancer, regardless of their individual conditions or physical needs.

There is a gentle and nurturing atmosphere, a passion for creativity and dance as one form of its expression. The sessions offer challenge when wanted, never push the dancers beyond what they wish to do and leave people feeling refreshed well beyond the end of the class. There is no question that the social and personal ripples from these classes are highly beneficial.

The return to live in-person classes has been a great joy to all, though the virtual classes continued throughout lockdown and provided a sterling service to the participants.
